Caliper
So one more cat out of the bag -- during the Academic Suite Product Roadmap presentation, our CEO, Michael Chasen, officially announced Project Caliper, the "secret project" I've been working on for the last couple of months with David Yaskin, our VP of Product Strategy.
After talking with our clients about their needs for tracking student outcomes, managing program assessment, accreditation, and other performance related needs, Blackboard realized that we're in a unique position to help clients effectively use technology to solve the problems around gathering, tracking, and managing this data. Enter Caliper.
Caliper is a project to build an entirely new system that will become the fourth application in the Blackboard Academic Suite. It will address client needs in four areas:
- Assessment Management (for program assessment & accreditation)
- Enterprise test & survey (placement testing, benchmark testing, etc.)
- Student Outcome Tracking
- Institutional Research & Data Analysis
By the way, "Caliper" = tool for measurement. Get it? ;-)

Yes, the intent is that the product that comes out of Project Caliper will be a fourth system in the Blackboard Academic Suite.
However, one of our requirements is to be able to offer it as a stand-alone product. That means even if an institution doesn't have any other Blackboard products (or has just the Blackboard Learning System Basic Edition) they will still be able to use the Project Caliper system.
Of course if your have other products in the Academic Suite, Caliper will be able to leverage that investment and provide even more functionality. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. ;-)
Greg, I notice you forgot to mention who came up with the Project Caliper name... :)
One of the issues that I have had with Assessment and Reporting is that Teachers can only provide comment on assignments posted using the 'Add Assignment' service. I would like to provide feedback to my students and their parents on all of the marks and grades that I upload into the Gradebook. Observers cannot see the comments for assigments as it stands. Is Caliper going to cause work in this area to cease? Will the Caliper squeeze out any further development in this included product for the Learning System?

What about the aesthetic value? Will instructors be able to designate a default font for their surveys/tests?
Will you be providing API's for Caliper for the building blocks developers the same way you provide API's for the rest of the Academic Suite?
